The MCAT is the one of the three with fixed dates, 35 U.S. test dates from January 15 to September 11, 2027, and a 12 week plan for the first of them starts on October 23, 2026. How long to study for the MCAT, counted back from each 2027 test date

If a 16 week start is already behind you, read the 12 week column. The four select location dates run only at some U.S. and Canadian centers, per the AAMC registration opening page, so check the testing calendar. There are no MCAT dates from October to December 2027.

How many hours a day to study for the MCAT, and for how many weeks

Six to eight hours a day for a minimum of six weeks is the figure in an AAMC student site article on MCAT preparation, and it is an opinion: an assistant dean for admissions at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine recommends it in the article, checked on September 26, 2026, under an editor's note that the opinions are the author's. She adds that six hours a day for six weeks yields more progress than 12 hours a day for three weeks.

Her minimum, six hours a day for 42 days, is 252 hours if every day counts, on this article's arithmetic. At three hours a day, six days a week, the same 252 hours takes 14 weeks, which is why the 12 and 16 week columns exist: they are the part time version of the same total. The exam itself is 230 questions in 6 hours 15 minutes of content time, laid out section by section on the MCAT page.

MCAT registration dates and the 60, 30 and 10 day deadlines

Scheduling for the 2027 MCAT dates opens October 20 to 22, 2026, at noon Eastern Time by testing center location: Group A on October 20, Group B on October 21 and Group C, all remaining test center locations, on October 22, per the AAMC registration opening page, checked on September 26, 2026. The same page asks you to fill out the first five tabs of the registration system between October 5 and 19.

Every appointment then has three change deadlines, 60, 30 and 10 days before the exam, each at 11:59 p.m. local test center time, and the AAMC grants no extensions, per the MCAT Essentials for Testing Year 2026, checked on September 26, 2026. The 10 day deadline is the last day to schedule, reschedule or cancel. For January 15, 2027 the AAMC calendar prints November 16, 2026, December 16, 2026 and January 5, 2027.

How long to study for Step 1, in dedicated weeks and questions

USMLE Step 1 is approximately 280 multiple choice questions in fourteen 30 minute blocks, a one day exam of about 8 hours, per the USMLE 2027 Bulletin of Information, and since May 14, 2026 a block holds no more than 20 questions, with at least 55 minutes of break time and a 5 minute optional tutorial, per the USMLE Step 1 page, both checked on September 26, 2026. Fourteen blocks of 30 minutes is 25,200 seconds, or 90 seconds a question.

Forty a day is two blocks of 20, one hour of answering at exam pace, and reviewing the misses comes on top. The daily number is argued in how many practice questions a day is enough, and the blueprint weights are on the Step 1 page.

When to book Step 1, and how long Step 1 results take

You can book Step 1 no more than six months ahead, and a change inside the last 45 calendar days before the appointment costs a fee, per the USMLE 2027 Bulletin of Information, checked on September 26, 2026. Test dates are first come, first served, and the Bulletin recommends booking early in your eligibility period.

Results are typically available two to four weeks after the test, and the Bulletin tells you to allow at least eight weeks when choosing a date. A Step can be taken no more than three times in 12 months, and a fourth attempt must come at least 12 months after the first and six months after the most recent. The application is USD 695 for 2026 and 2027, plus a USD 210 region fee outside the United States and Canada, per the USMLE apply page, checked on September 26, 2026.

Count back from the booked date: a 10 week plan can start after the booking, with room to move the appointment before the 45 day fee cliff. Pass rates by year are in the Step 1 passing score post.

How long to study for the NCLEX, counted from your Authorization to Test

The NCLEX-RN gives every candidate a minimum of 85 and a maximum of 150 items in five hours that include all breaks, per the 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan, which the NCLEX test plans page dates April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2029, both checked on September 26, 2026. At the 150 item maximum that is 120 seconds an item.

There are no fixed dates. You cannot book before your Authorization to Test arrives, and a first time candidate is offered an appointment 30 days after asking to schedule, per the NCLEX scheduling page, checked on September 26, 2026.

How many weeks for the NCLEX, and the fee change on February 1, 2027

The NCLEX registration fee becomes USD 350 in the United States and Australia on February 1, 2027, up from USD 200 for U.S. licensure, per the NCLEX fees page, checked on September 26, 2026. On this article's reading of that page the fee is charged when you register with Pearson, and a registration stays open for 365 days, so registering before February 1, 2027 keeps the USD 200 fee, even for a candidate whose ATT arrives later, as long as the eligibility comes inside those 365 days: a registration that expires first forfeits the fee, per the NCLEX registration page. A retake means a new registration and a new fee, per the NCLEX results page.

The 30 day wait for a first appointment is the natural first block of a plan: ask to schedule the day the ATT arrives, and a 4 week plan fits before the exam. At 30 questions a day, six days a week, that is 720 questions, 4.8 full 150 item exams and 24 hours of answering at 120 seconds, on this article's arithmetic. A longer plan means declining the first date offered.

How long does it take to get NCLEX results?

Official NCLEX results come from your nursing regulatory body within six weeks of the exam. If that body takes part in the Quick Results Service, unofficial results are available two business days after the exam for USD 7.95, charged only if the result is ready. Quick Results do not authorize you to practice, per the NCLEX pages checked on September 26, 2026.

How soon can you retake the NCLEX?

Forty five days after the exam, under the NCSBN retake policy, and up to eight times a year with 45 test-free days between exams. Some nursing regulatory bodies wait longer or allow fewer attempts, and the new ATT shows the dates. A retake means registering with Pearson again and paying the fee, which rises from USD 200 to USD 350 on February 1, 2027.

When should I register for the MCAT in 2027?

At the opening, if you want a specific date: scheduling opens October 20 to 22, 2026 at noon Eastern Time, by testing center location, and the AAMC asks you to fill out the first five tabs of the registration system between October 5 and 19. Four 2027 dates run only at select locations. After booking, the 60, 30 and 10 day deadlines set what a change costs.
