# What works in your language, and what does not

> Questions come out in the language of your document, or the one you pick. Three tiers say how much of the checking is written in your language, and what is not.

Works in any language, and quality varies by language. The picker lists 7,048 of them: the questions come out in the language of your document, or in the one you pick. What changes between languages is not the questions, it is how much of the checking is written in your language, so this page sets that out in three tiers instead of claiming one number.

The list is the ISO 639-3 code table published by the registration authority, filtered to the 7,020 entries marked as living individual languages, plus the 28 names this site keeps by hand that the table does not list that way, such as Chinese, Arabic and Norwegian, which it holds as macrolanguages. 7,020 and 28 is the 7,048 in the picker. The other hand-kept names are already in the table and are not counted twice. Every count on this page is read off that file when the page is built, not typed into the copy.

The third column is the exact instruction the question prompt carries. It is printed here from the same code that sends it, so it cannot drift away from what the site really does.

Everything runs, including the pattern list that rejects all of the above options, which of the following is true stems and questions about the text rather than the subject. Those patterns are written by hand in each of these languages: English and Polish first, German and French on September 16, 2026, and the other 24 on September 19, 2026.

### Tier 2: questions, grading and the debrief, with the document's language detected for you (11)

Български (Bulgarian), Русский (Russian), Українська (Ukrainian), Türkçe (Turkish), Српски (Serbian), हिन्दी (Hindi), Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian), Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese), ไทย (Thai), فارسی (Persian), اردو (Urdu).

The language of your upload is worked out from the pages themselves, so the setting "Same as the document" resolves before any allowance is spent, and it is shown on the form. The quote check and the blind second answer run exactly as they do in English. The phrase level filter does not, because its patterns are written by hand and exist for the tier one languages only.

### Tier 3: questions in the language you pick (7,009)

Pick the language by hand on the generate form. The questions, grading and the debrief are asked for in it, and the quote check and the blind second answer still run. What is missing is automatic detection of a document in that language and the phrase level filter. The picker says the same thing in one line when you choose one of these: Questions come out in this language. Open models have seen less of it than of English, so read the first few carefully. Quotes are always copied from your document as printed, never translated.

## What is the same in every language

Two of the checks do not read the language at all. The quote check is a string lookup in the stored text of the page the question cited, so it works the same in Hungarian as it does in English, and the blind second answer is another model answering from the quotes, which it does in whatever language the quotes are printed in. The near duplicate index compares questions from the same document, so it also runs everywhere. The one check that is written in a language is the phrase level filter, which is why the tiers above exist at all. ## Honest limits

- A model writes better questions in a language it has seen more of. Tier 3 is a list of languages the form accepts, not a promise that every one of them reads as well as English. For a language with little writing on the public web, read the first few questions before you generate a hundred more.
- The autonym next to each name comes from the browser and from the Worker, both of which carry Unicode display data for a few hundred languages. Where that data is missing the picker shows the English reference name rather than a spelling nobody here can check.
- Detection needs prose. A page of tables and abbreviations may not be enough to tell two close languages apart, and an unclear result leaves the form's default in place: the language of the site you are reading, or "Same as the document" on the English site.
- Mixed language documents are common in medicine. The instruction asks for one output language and the quote stays in the language of the page, so a Latin term in a German chapter comes back as it was printed.
- Scanned pages lose diacritics when recognition misreads them. A quote that no longer matches the page is dropped rather than shown to you.

## Questions about languages

### Which language do the questions come out in?

On a translated version of the site, that language, unless you pick another one or Same as the document on the generate form. On the English site the questions come out in the language of the document.

### Does the quote get translated?

No. The quoted sentence is copied from your page exactly as printed, in the language it was printed in, because the server checks that quote against the stored text of that page. A translated quote would fail the check and the question would be dropped.

### Is grading in my language too?

Yes. Written answers are graded in the language of the question, and the post exam debrief and the tutor answer in it as well.

### Why are some languages in tier two rather than tier one?

Because the pattern list that throws out lazy items, all of the above options and which of the following is true stems, is written by hand for each language, and it exists for the tier one languages only. The other checks, the quote check and the blind second answer, do not depend on language at all and run everywhere.
